(Take home matzoh ball soup, chicken stock and all chicken soups are available everyday, year-round from our cold cases)

You’ve heard it before, maybe it was your mom or your grandmother suggesting chicken soup as a remedy when you weren’t feeling well. Chicken stock (also referred to as bone broth) cooked with onions, carrots, and celery is packed with healing nutrients that aside from treating a common cold, may help to protect your gut, increase immunity, and battle inflammation. The best broth is simmered for hours to deliver the most health benefits. As the broth slowly cooks, amino acids, minerals, collagen, and gelatin are absorbed into the stock.

Chicken Soup Facts
Using chicken soup for good health is undoubtedly not a new trend, the medicinal benefits were realized as far back as 400 BC when the “Father of Medicine,” Hippocrates recommended it for digestive ailments. In the 12th century, the Egyptian Jewish physician and philosopher, Moshe ben Maimonides, recommended chicken soup for respiratory tract symptoms. In the year 2000, physicians and researchers finally put the claims written centuries earlier to the test. A study by the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), found that chicken broth contains many substances with beneficial medicinal benefits including anti-inflammatory action that could ease the symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections. Read the report here.

In addition to helping to heal a respiratory infection, chicken soup may also help with reducing inflammation in general, and aiding in digestion. It’s no wonder it has remained a popular health remedy for thousands of years!

Do All Chicken Broths Deliver the Same Benefits?
The convenience of instant bouillons and powders make them a popular choice for people who don’t have the time to watch a simmering pot all day. But the dehydrated versions sold today contain additives and preservatives such as MSG.

For example, a very popular brand has the following ingredients in their bouillon cubes: Salt, monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrogenated cottonseed oil, chicken fat, hydrolyzed soy/corn protein, dehydrated mechanically separated cooked chicken, dehydrated chicken meat, dehydrated chicken broth, autolyzed yeast extract, dehydrated onions & parsley, lactose, water, color, spices & spice extract, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, citric acid, tartaric acid, hydrogenated soybean oil and sulphites.

That is a long list of processed ingredients. Reaping the full benefits of home-made broth, or as it is referred to in the research “Grandma’s Chicken Soup,” comes from all natural broth made with high-quality poultry, fresh vegetables and herbs, and simmered for hours upon hours.

Good for Your Taste Buds and Waistline Too!
Aside from medicinal benefits, chicken stock is a base ingredient for many recipes. It can be used to add flavor to sauces, as a base for all types of soups and stews, and great for cooking vegetables. Or just enjoy sipping a delicious nutrient packed hot beverage. Low in calories and fat, it is also promoted as a weight loss aid. Consuming soups before meals can help you feel full and reduce hunger during the day.
